They act as air purifiers by efficiently capturing CO2 (greenhouse gas) and releasing precious oxygen to the atmosphere. Mangroves are also natural barriers protecting the coast against storms preventing erosion. These rich ecosystems serve as natural nurseries and spawning grounds for most of the local and oceanic species of fish and shellfish. It is no wonder that local communities choose these places to settle in the first place.
