World Wetlands Day (WWD)/Día Mundial de los Humedales.

WWD is celebrated since 1971 after the Ramsar Convention took place in Ramsar, Iran. This year our national convention took place in Mazatlan. Mexico officially added 45 new sites ( 2.7 million hectares) to the list of Wetlands protected by the Ramsar Convention. Of this new 45 sites, 4 are located in our state: Sinaloa.

Mexico has now 112 Ramsar sites (approximately 8 million hectares) and 7 of them are located in Sinaloa.

Since February 2007, mangroves in Mexico are protected by the Articulo 60 TER de la Ley General de Vida Silvestre (Wildlife General Law) which states that mangrove areas cannot be modified at all except for projects that are intended to “restore, research, protect or conserve them”.

Three mexican senators are pushing to change this law in order to favor tourist projects in protected areas. Two of these reforms have already been turned down and the only remaining is yet to be analyzed.
