Recent news on mangroves conservation in Mexico:

December  3rd, 2008.

A PRI* Deputy proposes to modify Article 60 of the mexican Wildlife General Law in order to allow mangrove destruction to favor the creation of touristic infraestructure.

Since February 2007, mangroves in Mexico are protected by this article which states that mangrove areas cannot be modified at all except for projects that are intended to “restore, research, protect or conserve them”.

January 19th, 2009.

The polemic “Ley General de Turismo” (General Law of Tourism) was approved by the mexican congress. This law is intended to promote tourism growth in Mexico in order to double the number of incoming tourists by 2020.

According to nature conservation experts, this law has left many loose ends that will affect the conditions of the mexican ecosystems; particularly mangrove areas.
